Traveling is an enriching experience that opens up the world, offering new perspectives and adventures. However, traveling can sometimes bring unique challenges. Here are some thoughtful tips and tricks to ensure your travels are safe, enjoyable, and empowering.
Planning
- Flexible Itinerary: Plan a flexible schedule that allows for downtime and spontaneity. Your on-the-go travel partners can become easily overwhelmed, so it's important to have a balance of activities and rest.
- Got kids? Involve them in Planning: Engage your children in the planning process by allowing them to help choose destinations or activities. This can make them more excited and invested in the trip.
Packing Smart
- Pack Light and Right: Choose versatile clothing items that can be mixed and matched. Consider fabrics that are lightweight, wrinkle-resistant, and quick-drying.
- Organize with Packing Cubes: Use packing cubes to organize clothing and gear for each family member. This makes it easier to find what you need without unpacking everything.
- Essentials: Carry travel-sized toiletries and a basic first aid kit. Don't forget essentials like medications, band-aids, wet wipes, and hand sanitizer, sunscreen, a reusable water bottle, and a portable charger.
- Security: Use a money belt or hidden pouch to keep your valuables safe. Consider a crossbody bag for easy access and security.
Safety First
- Research: Learn about your destination's culture, customs, and any safety concerns. Stay informed about local news and current events.
- Stay Connected: Share your travel itinerary with someone you trust. Check in regularly through calls or messages.
- Identification for Littles: Equip your children with identification cards that include your contact information in case you get separated.
Accommodation Choices
- Female or Family Friendly Accommodations: Consider staying at female-only hostels or family friendly accommodations that have positive reviews from solo female travelers.
- Kitchen Facilities: Consider staying in places with kitchen facilities to easily prepare meals or snacks, which can be a blessing for your wallet and be helpful for picky eaters or dietary needs.
Health and Wellness
- Stay Hydrated: Drink plenty of water, especially if you're traveling to warmer climates or engaging in physical activities.
- Rest: Travel can be exhausting. Make sure to get enough rest and take breaks when needed.
- Mindful Eating: Try local cuisines but be cautious with street food. Ensure food is cooked thoroughly and choose bottled water if necessary.
- Have kids who like their routines?: Try to keep children on a routine similar to their home schedule, including meal times and bedtime, to help them adjust and feel secure.
Road Trip with the Kiddos
- Help everyone to visualize your trip: Create a map that you can hang inside your ride and a little paper car that you can move along the route. (We used some construction paper and taped it to the ceiling of our Minivan). Mark spots where you can open surprises (Dollar Store- Activity Books, Coloring books, tiny LEGO sets, Stuffies) and your travelers will look forward to these mini-spots along the way (and not just the final destination).
- Shower Caddy Organizers: You can use Shower Caddies as organizers for anything from crayons to french fries and everything in between. No fighting over space or toys...to each their own!
Emergency Preparedness
- Discuss Safety Plans: Talk to your travel group about what to do if you get separated and establish a meeting point at each location you visit.
- Have a Backup Plan: Keep copies of important documents, such as your passport and insurance, both digitally and in physical form.
Traveling can be a wonderfully liberating experience. By staying informed and prepared, you can embrace the adventure with confidence and create memories that will last a lifetime.
